Jata Shankar Caves

The place is named after the mythological belief that Lord Shiva shaded his matted locks (Jata) here. This sacred site is one of the most spiritually significant places in Pachmarhi and draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists throughout the year.

The site features approximately 108 naturally formed Shivalingas within the cave structure — a remarkable natural phenomenon considered to be of divine significance. A notable feature is an underground water source called "Gupt Ganga", whose origin remains unknown, adding to the mystical aura of the place.

The cave maintains significantly lower temperatures than outside areas, making it a cool refuge even during the hot summer months. An upper platform within the cave houses idol installations of Lord Shankar, Goddess Parvati, and Shivalinga.

The site attracts large numbers of visitors annually, particularly during the festival of Mahashivaratri, when many pilgrims arrive for religious ceremonies and rituals. The atmosphere during this festival is particularly electric and deeply spiritual.
