Handi Khoh

Handi Khoh is a 300-foot deep V-shaped ravine created between two massive hills — one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring natural formations in Pachmarhi. The sheer depth and vertical walls of this gorge leave every visitor breathless.

The name "Handi Khoh" translates literally to "pot-shaped gorge" — a reference to the shape of the ravine, which resembles a large cooking pot (handi) when viewed from the rim. The depth and narrowness of the gorge create a unique microclimate with cool air rising from below.

The Legend of Handi Khoh

According to local legend, Handi Khoh was once a large lake. An evil snake — which was actually a demon in disguise — was guarding the lake. Lord Shiva, in his divine fury, killed the snake and the energy of this cosmic battle dried up the water in the lake. The empty space then assumed the shape of a handi (pot), giving the place its distinctive name.

Another local story tells of a British officer named Handi who committed suicide by jumping into the ravine during the colonial era, further adding to the mysterious and slightly eerie atmosphere of the place.

Dense forest covers the slopes of the ravine, and on misty days, clouds fill the gorge creating an ethereal, almost otherworldly scene. The viewing platform at the top offers a safe vantage point to peer into the depths below.
